Oscar Results: Birdman Soars to Victory

Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) was the big winner at Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony, taking home four of the Oscars’ top honors.

Many Oscar pundits had predicted that the Best Picture and Best Director Oscars would be split between Birdman and Boyhood, but Alejandro G. Iñárritu also beat out Boyhood‘s Richard Linklater for Best Director. In fact, despite Linklater’s much-ballyhooed effort of making Boyhood over a period of four years, the only statue his six-time nominated film took home was for Best Supporting Actress for Patricia Arquette.

Two of the other acting wins – J.K. Simmons for Best Supporting Actor in Whiplash and Julianne Moore for Best Actress in Still Alice – had seemed like virtual locks for the entire Oscar race. Veteran Batman actor Michael Keaton was left empty-handed for his Birdman turn, however, when Oscar voters sided with The Theory of Everything‘s Eddie Redmayne.

Birdman‘s cinematographer, Emmanuel Lubezki, took home his second consecutive Oscar. (He also won the award last year for Gravity, after five prior nominations.)

Wes Anderson‘s The Grand Budapest Hotel was another big winner Sunday night, also taking home four Oscars, for Best Score, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Whiplash garnered three wins, with Best Editing and Best Sound Mixing in addition to Simmons’ Best Supporting Actor trophy.
